Article: The Predictive Power of Evolutionary Biology and the Discovery of Eusociality in the Naked Mole Rat (Stan Braude), on the National Center for Science Education website. This article documents RDA’s prediction of the existence and natural history naked-mole rat from evolutionary first principles.

National Academy of Sciences Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal (as of 2017 the NAS Award in the Evolution of Earth and Life): Awarded to RDA in 1971 for “his outstanding fundamental work on the systematic, evolution, and behavior of crickets.”

List of recipients of the Newcomb Cleveland Prize of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Scroll down to 1961 to see RDA, who received this prize for his Systematic Zoology paper “The role of behavioral study in cricket classification”. See here for a general description of the Newcomb Cleveland Prize.  Before 1975 this was a broadly applicable scientific award and its recipients reflected some of the most important scientific studies of their respective years, regardless of where they were published (although they had to be presented at AAAS). Since then, however, it has become more parochial, its recipients being selected only from papers that have been published in Science.

Singing Insects Of North America page, by Thomas J. Walker. This tremendous resource, in the words of its creator, “had its genesis in the early 1960’s, when R. D. Alexander proposed that the three persons most actively involved in recording the sounds of North American insects cooperate to produce a book entitled The Acoustical Insects of North America, “in sections variously authored” by Richard D. Alexander, Thomas J. Walker, and Thomas E. Moore.” That plan was never implemented… but TJW and TEM produced this in its place, which is certainly more useful and convenient than a book on this topic could ever be.

The Sociobiology blog by RDA’s former student and colleague Joan Strassmann: “Evolutionary biologist, studies social behavior in insects & microbes, interested in education, travel, birds, tropics, nature, food; biology professor at Washington University in St. Louis”. Of many scientific, and specifically evolutionary, blogs, this one is probably the one that is closest to the spirit of the thought of RDA.
